Online Medical Interpreter Program

Greetings and welcome to Culture Advantage. If you speak two languages fluently, you can now train for medical interpreting from the convenience of your home and at less expense. My goal is to help people who are currently working, or have other life responsibilities, to be able to complete the Online Medical Interpreter Program without taking too much time away from home or from their families.

Update August, 2018: Please see our current Medical Interpreter Training program plans for 2018. Please note that our curriculum and fees have changed over the years.

We have trained many interpreters (both novice and experienced) who, after fully completing our program, have successfully went on to become CMIs and CHIs (Certified Medical Interpreters and Certified Healthcare Interprters).

Our interpreter training programs are designed to prepare interpreters for interpreting in hospital and clinical settings, from a healthcare provider's perpsective. Accordingly, our program is also an excellent choice for bilingual healthcare professionals, and was first designed with the needs of providers in mind. We highly encourage nurses and doctors working with diverse, international patient populations to apply.

Our program is also approved for continuing education (CEUs) for nurses.

Please feel free to contact program director Marlene Obermeyer (MA, RN) directly at 316-217-0198, or at director@cultureadvantage.org for current information.

Once again, please see our current fees and program plans for updated 2018 information. We are in the process of updating some (occasionally very) outdated pages (including this one!) As said earlier, our curriculum and fees have changed over the years, but our emphasis on a healthcare provider's perspective to medical interpreting has not, and we encourage new and experienced interpreters alike to apply to our programs, available in a variety of languages.

Hello, my name is Marlene Obermeyer. As an adult, I went back to school several years ago and I understand how taking time to learn and at the same time take care of family, or working full-time, could be difficult. That is why I designed the Online Medical Interpreter Program to be flexible to meet the needs of people like myself.

After successful completion of the online medical interpreter program, you will receive a CERTIFICATE of COMPLETION.
This program will prepare you to work as a hospital interpreter, or a clinic interpreter, or a community healthcare interpreter.

CONTACT ME (See above for August 2018): I am available by phone at 316-217-0198, or you can email me at director@cultureadvantage.org for updated program fees and for curriculum information.

The online medical interpreter training program is based the standards of the International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA). It has been reviewed and approved by the IMIA as meeting the requirements for a medical interpreter training program and for inclusion in the IMIA training directory.

Medical Terminology Bootcamps for the IMIA Your instructor, Marlene Obermeyer, has presented a number of "Medical Terminology Bootcamps" at previous IMIA conferences. As a nurse, Marlene is a steadfast believer that a solid understanding of medical terminology, diseases, and procedures are a necessary foundation for interpreting accurately in healthcare. Our programs actually go beyond training "basic" medical terminology into the practical, necessary and useful terminology encountered in healthcare settings every day. In the era of patient-centered healthcare, it is the case that doctors, nurses, and most importantly patients, demand and deserve interpreters with this sorely needed skillset.

Our instructor is a member and Kansas State Representative of the International Medical Interpreters Association. She adheres to the ethical standards of the organization.

If you are interested in the program or have questions, please fill out the application form.

Furthermore, please check out our current Payment Plans.

Are you new to taking an online course? When we first started our online program, there weren't a lot of online courses out there, whether for medical interpreters, for nurses, or for people in general! Still today, however, we do sometimes have applicants who do not have a lot of background taking online courses. In our program we do include a short orientation to taking an online course. It is important to have necessary, basic skills for using a computer and the internet for reading lessons and taking lessons online.
Click here to learn more about taking an online course. Note: this link is outdated for 2018; please see the update notice at the top of this page for more info. I will teach you how to take a short course. This is the same format that we use for the Online Medical Interpreter Program.
